Taipei Officials to Address Fire Safety After Blaze at Historic Zhinangong Temple

A significant fire erupted at the historic Zhinangong Temple in Taipei's Wenshan District late Monday night, causing extensive damage to the first floor of the Lingxiao Baodian hall and partial damage to the second floor. The blaze has prompted swift attention from city officials regarding the temple's safety and the broader issue of fire prevention in religious sites.

Taipei City Government Secretary-General Wang Yu-fen addressed the incident during a city council meeting, stating that the fire investigation is ongoing. She assured that the Department of Civil Affairs, in conjunction with the Departments of Urban Development, Construction, and Cultural Affairs, will meet with temple representatives by Friday to discuss further assistance.

Councilor Hung Wan-chen raised concerns about the fire safety of Taipei's 1,905 temples, noting that regulations can hinder necessary renovations, particularly for designated cultural heritage sites. Wang committed to a specialized approach for addressing fire safety within temples, acknowledging the importance of these structures for the community and the potential public safety risks.
