Taiwan Faces Expanding Rainfall as Plum Rain Season Frontal Systems Arrive

As Taiwan braces for the onset of the plum rain season, weather experts are forecasting a significant increase in rainfall across the island. The Central Weather Administration has indicated that a frontal system, coupled with strengthening northeasterly winds, will bring cooler temperatures and widespread showers, particularly to the northern and eastern regions. This initial wave is expected to be followed by a second frontal system by Friday, further extending the period of unsettled weather.

Meteorological expert Wu Der-rong highlighted that the current frontal system will cause rainfall to expand from north to south over the next two days. He noted that the second wave of the plum rain season is anticipated to affect the island starting Friday, with chances of showers and thunderstorms in central and northern Taiwan, as well as mountainous areas in the south. Residents are advised to be aware of potential hazards such as lightning strikes, strong winds, and localized heavy downpours.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to improve from Wednesday morning through Thursday as the initial front weakens and moves away, leading to warmer temperatures. However, this respite will be short-lived, as the second frontal system approaches by Friday evening, bringing another round of rain and cooler temperatures. This pattern of alternating periods of rain and improving weather is characteristic of Taiwan's plum rain season, a crucial period for agricultural water supply but also a time that demands vigilance against potential flooding and disruptions.
