Taiwan Man Gets 14 Months for Killing Elderly Woman While Driving Without a License After DUI Suspension

A tragic incident in Miaoli County has resulted in a prison sentence for a man who, despite having his driver's license suspended for drunk driving, took to the road without authorization and caused the death of an elderly pedestrian. The court has handed down a sentence of 1 year and 2 months for negligent homicide, emphasizing the severity of the offense when committed by an unlicensed driver.

The accused, identified by the surname Lin, had his driving privileges revoked for four years starting April 6, 2021. However, in a shocking disregard for the law, he was caught driving on April 2, 2025, just four days before his suspension period was set to expire. While driving through an unmarked three-way intersection in Tongxiao Township, he struck an 88-year-old woman who was crossing the road.

Despite Lin's admission of guilt to the police at the scene, which typically warrants a reduced sentence, the judge ruled that the act of driving with a suspended license and causing a fatality warranted an aggravated penalty under Taiwan's Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act.
