TAJEMTRA Jember Draws 26,000 Participants and Sets a New Record

The Tanggul-Jember Traditional Walk, known as TAJEMTRA, drew 26,000 participants this year, breaking the records set in previous editions. The event began at 1 p.m. from Jember’s town square, sending participants along a route of about 30 kilometers from Tanggul toward the center of Jember.

Attendance has risen sharply. The event drew 15,155 participants in 2024 and 15,171 in 2025, according to Regar Jeane, head of Jember’s Youth and Sports, Culture and Tourism Office. This year’s turnout, he said, showed that TAJEMTRA had grown beyond a sporting activity into part of the community’s tradition, identity and pride.

Regar said the crowds, along with families, supporters and residents lining the route, could benefit small businesses, food and drink sellers, service providers and other local enterprises. “We want TAJEMTRA to truly become a people’s festival. The tradition began in 1977 and has continued across generations. Its roughly 30-kilometer journey is presented not simply as a walking contest, but as an expression of endurance, discipline, solidarity, mutual cooperation and Jember pride. “Since 1977 until today, the generations have changed, but the spirit of TAJEMTRA remains the same,” Regar said. Students, members of the public, community groups, civil servants, workers, older people and younger people all share the same route and finish line.
