Tampere stabbing attacker sentenced to over nine years in prison

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years and six months in prison for a violent stabbing spree in Tampere, Finland, that injured four people. Ville-Valtteri Johannes Väänänen was convicted of three counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault by the Pirkanmaa District Court.

The court described the July 2025 attack as extremely serious and premeditated, noting that the victims were unknown individuals who had not provoked the assault. The incident, which occurred in the Ratinan area of Tampere's city center, instilled widespread fear. Väänänen was ordered to pay thousands of euros in compensation to the victims for their suffering, pain, and permanent injuries.

According to a psychiatric evaluation, Väänänen was deemed sane and understood the consequences of his actions. A dangerousness assessment concluded he poses a significant risk to others due to his criminal history, which includes previous convictions for serious violent offenses, such as stabbing an acquaintance. The Ratinan stabbing occurred while Väänänen was on probation for a prior conviction.

Surveillance footage captured the entire incident, which lasted about a minute. Three of the four victims were women, and one was a man. Some victims were repeatedly stabbed. Security guards from a nearby shopping center and a police patrol quickly intervened, leading to Väänänen's immediate arrest. Prosecutors had sought a minimum of nine years for the combined sentence, which includes a period of supervised release.
