Tax firm employee sentenced to 5 years for embezzling 700 million won

A tax firm employee in South Korea has been sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling approximately 700 million won (about $500,000 USD) from clients under the guise of handling their tax payments and related fees. The employee, identified as a 55-year-old, worked at a tax accounting firm and was responsible for real estate tax matters.

Between July 2019 and March 2023, the employee received funds from clients for capital gains tax and local tax payments, as well as agency fees. Instead of remitting these payments to the tax authorities, the employee pocketed the money, using it for personal real estate development projects and to cover living expenses. The court found that the embezzlement caused significant financial damage to the victims, who were unaware of their tax delinquency and incurred substantial additional penalties and interest.

In an attempt to hide the crime, the employee also resorted to forging official seals. The individual is accused of illicitly using the tax office director's seal on payment receipts during times when the relevant tax office staff were absent. This act of forgery was intended to create a false impression that the taxes had been paid and the transactions were legitimate, further concealing the ongoing embezzlement.

The Gwangju District Court, in its sentencing, emphasized the severity of the crime. Presiding Judge Yoo Hyung-woong stated that the financial losses incurred by the victims, including significant additional charges due to non-payment, were substantial, exceeding the embezzled amount in some cases. Consequently, the court deemed a heavy sentence unavoidable due to the extensive damage caused by the defendant's actions.
