Teenager arrested at Bangkok airport with 30 tortoises taped to body

Thai wildlife officials have apprehended a teenager at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok for a brazen attempt to smuggle 30 protected Indian star tortoises, a stark reminder of the persistent illegal wildlife trade flowing through the region. The incident, which occurred early Tuesday, underscores Thailand's position as a critical transit point for smugglers dealing in high-value, endangered species destined for the lucrative black market.

The 19-year-old Taiwanese woman drew the attention of authorities due to her unusual behavior as she prepared to board a flight to Taipei. A subsequent search revealed the shocking method of concealment: the tortoises were taped to her body, with 29 alive and one deceased. This discovery highlights the cruelty involved in such smuggling operations, where animals are subjected to extreme stress and often do not survive the journey.

These Indian star tortoises are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and are highly sought after as exotic pets. Their estimated value is around $9,000, indicating the significant profits involved in this illicit trade. The woman has been charged with illegal animal transportation and customs evasion, and authorities are investigating potential links to a larger smuggling network.
