Terengganu Bersatu Deputy Head to Resign Amidst Leadership Crisis

The leadership crisis within Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in Terengganu has intensified as Deputy Head Khazan Che Mat announced his intention to resign from all his positions. This move follows the recent departures of several other senior figures in the state chapter, signaling significant internal turmoil.

Khazan, who also serves as the Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, confirmed he would submit his resignation letter next week. He will step down from his role as the Head of Bersatu's Kuala Nerus Division and relinquish his deputy leadership of the state chapter. He stated that his decision was made after considering the views of the party's committee members.

Adding to the party's challenges, Khazan mentioned the difficulty in securing funds to cover the allowances for staff and the rent for the office building for two months prior to his departure. This financial strain appears to be a contributing factor to the party's operational difficulties.

Bersatu Terengganu was reportedly already facing a leadership vacuum after State Chapter Head Datuk Razali Idris resigned, followed by two other senior leaders: Mohd. Zawawi Ismail, the State Information Chief and Assemblyman for Telemong, and Mohd Husaimi Hussin, the State Treasurer and Assemblyman for Hulu Besut. Khazan clarified that despite being the second-highest official in Bersatu Terengganu, he has no intention of assuming the acting state chairman role, emphasizing that he is not seeking higher office and joined Bersatu in 2016 at Razali's invitation.

Khazan also pointed to Bersatu's slow response in filling vacant division leadership positions, particularly in the Besut and Hulu Terengganu divisions, as a weakness within the party's operations. This slow pace in addressing internal structural issues exacerbates the ongoing leadership challenges.
