Texas's Last Traditional Mall to Be Replaced by Mixed-Use 'The Bend'

A significant transformation is on the horizon for Plano, Texas, as The Shops at Willow Bend, the state's final traditional indoor shopping mall, prepares for demolition. Opened in 2001, the mall has struggled with declining foot traffic and store closures, culminating in Macy's departure in 2024. Its closure marks the end of an era for enclosed shopping centers in Texas.

In its place, a modern, open-air, mixed-use development named 'The Bend' will rise. Spearheaded by developer Centennial Real Estate, the project aims to create a vibrant urban neighborhood. The expansive 1.3 million-square-foot site at 6121 W Park Boulevard will be reimagined to include residential units, offices, dining establishments, and a hotel. A key feature of 'The Bend' will be its emphasis on green spaces, pedestrian walkways, and communal gathering areas, fostering a lifestyle-oriented environment.

Construction is slated to commence next year with the initial phase focusing on site preparation, followed by the development of commercial and residential zones. While the demolition proceeds, select areas of the existing mall, including the restaurant district, parking facilities, Crate & Barrel, and Equinox gym, will remain operational. Furthermore, discussions are underway regarding the potential relocation of the Dallas Stars' arena to 'The Bend' once their current contract at the American Airlines Center expires in 2031, adding a major sports and entertainment venue to the ambitious project.
