Thalia Terrero wins gold eight years later

Eight years after setting her sights on a gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games, Dominican karateka Thalia Terrero finally claimed the top prize. The victory, achieved on home soil before her cheering crowd, held a special significance for the 28-year-old athlete.

Terrero's journey to gold was marked by setbacks. She cited "inexperience" for her failure to medal in the 2018 Barranquilla games and was unable to compete in the 2023 San Salvador games due to her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter, Leah, in March 2023.

On the final day of competition, Terrero secured the -55kg title with a decisive 10-3 victory over Cuba's Baurelys Torres. Her path to the final included wins against opponents from Guatemala, Colombia, and Venezuela. This triumph adds to the Dominican Republic's karate success at the games, with María Dimitrova also winning gold in team kata.

Despite facing a significant knee injury in 2024, tearing a nerve, Terrero found the strength to return. She credits her daughter as her primary motivation, stating, "Everything has been thanks to my daughter, she is the one who has pushed me to achieve all my goals." This win follows her gold medal at the Pan American Karate Championship earlier in 2024, capping a remarkable comeback.
