The cleanest dog breeds: low odor, little shedding and easy care

For people choosing a dog, household cleanliness can be an important consideration. Some breeds are known for producing little odor, shedding very little hair or requiring relatively simple grooming.

Basenjis rank first on the list. They are known for their unusual yodel-like sound, meticulous hygiene, low odor and minimal shedding. Their habit of grooming themselves makes them somewhat similar to cats and reduces the need for frequent baths.

Poodles are recognized for their intelligence and curls, which limit shedding. Bichon Frises also shed very little and do not tend to develop strong odors, although their coats need brushing and trimming to prevent tangles. Whippets have short coats, little shedding and minimal odor, requiring only occasional baths and some brushing.

Xoloitzcuintles, also known as Mexican hairless dogs, have little or no coat to shed and do not produce the typical odors associated with many dogs. Their skin needs special attention, including protection from the sun. Maltese dogs have long, silky white coats that shed very little. Despite their appearance, they are relatively easy to groom, though their hair needs regular care and trimming.
