Thessaloniki: Protection guidelines against smoke from Oreokastro fire

Health experts are urging residents of Thessaloniki, particularly those in areas affected by a dense smoke cloud from a large fire in Oreokastro, to take protective measures. The director of the Pneumology Clinic at Hippocrates Hospital, Drösos Tsavlis, warned that the situation remains particularly dangerous as long as winds fail to disperse the microparticles.

Tsavlis explained that the risk is heightened for individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses, who may experience a worsening of their symptoms due to the polluted atmosphere. He advised those in smoke-affected areas to minimize their travel, use masks, stay well-hydrated, and, if possible, temporarily relocate away from heavily polluted zones.

Particular attention is advised if symptoms such as a persistent cough, throat irritation, watery eyes, or difficulty breathing occur. Tsavlis clarified that initial mild symptoms do not warrant panic, but persistent discomfort or health deterioration should prompt individuals to consult a doctor. Experts also reminded the public that smoke from fires in industrial facilities and recycling plants can significantly degrade air quality, releasing microparticles and irritants into the atmosphere.

The recommendation for citizens, especially those in vulnerable groups, is to monitor their health, avoid unnecessary exposure to smoke, and seek medical assistance if symptoms do not subside. The fire in Oreokastro has created a significant air quality issue for the region, necessitating these public health advisories.
