'They Made Millions Laugh, Now It's Our Turn to Make Them Smile': Call for Support for Yeşilçam Veterans

In Turkey, the golden age of Yeşilçam cinema, which brought joy to millions, is a cherished memory. However, the artists who dedicated their lives to this era are now facing difficult times, with many struggling to make ends meet and find stable housing. This situation has prompted a call to action from lawyer Onur Yağışan, who has initiated the "Yeşilçam Huzurevi" (Yeşilçam Retirement Home) project.

Most Yeşilçam actors don't have homes, some live in shacks. I heard a former leading man was found dead in a shack. No artist deserves such an end.

Veteran actors like Serpil Nur and Şehnaz Dilan have voiced their concerns, highlighting the dire circumstances of their colleagues. Nur shared heartbreaking stories of actors living in shacks, with one former leading man found dead in such a dwelling. She emphasized that no artist deserves such a fate and appealed for support from artists and the government to provide a home for those in need. Many of these artists lacked social security and have no financial safety net today, leaving them in precarious situations, often relying on public care homes or facing homelessness.

Dilan echoed these sentiments, stressing the urgency of the situation for actors without homes. She praised Yağışan's initiative as a unique and necessary undertaking in Turkey. She also appealed to singers and the government for support, noting that some associations are not providing adequate assistance. The current generation of actors, like Dilan, are witnessing firsthand the struggles of their predecessors, underscoring the need for immediate action and a collective show of gratitude for their contributions.
