Thousands Run in Karşıyaka for Mother's Day Tribute

Cumhuriyet celebrated the 37th Zübeyde Hanım Run, a cherished Mother's Day tradition in Karşıyaka. This year's event saw over 1100 participants, demonstrating the community's enduring connection to the memory of Zübeyde Hanım, mother of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The run, starting from Anayasa Square and traversing key city routes, culminated at her memorial tomb, a powerful symbol of national heritage. The atmosphere was one of deep respect and affection, as participants honored both Zübeyde Hanım and Atatürk. The laying of red carnations and soil brought from her Selanik (Thessaloniki) home added a deeply personal and historical touch to the proceedings. Karşıyaka Mayor Yıldız Ünsal's address resonated with the spirit of the day, emphasizing the vital role of mothers as "architects of the future" and "pillars of society." Her words also underscored a commitment to the "values of the Republic" and the principles Atatürk established, highlighting how Zübeyde Hanım's legacy is intertwined with the nation's modern identity. The selection of a fallen teacher, Ayla Kara, as "Mother of the Year" by the Turkish Mothers Association's Karşıyaka branch further added a poignant layer to the commemorations, recognizing maternal sacrifice and dedication.
