Three vigilantes from same family shot dead in fresh Plateau attack

Tragedy struck the Tarai community in Jol village, Plateau State, Nigeria, when three vigilantes from the same family were killed by suspected gunmen. The attack occurred Tuesday night around 10:47 p.m. as the brothers were performing their community watch duties.

The victims, identified as Dachung Danjuma, 51; Victor Danjuma, 37; and Nyam Danjuma, 35, were biological brothers. They were reportedly killed instantly when the assailants stormed the community and opened fire on the local security volunteers. Their deaths have left their family and the wider community in a state of devastation.

A community member, Lyop Bitrus, recounted that the brothers were ambushed during a routine night patrol, causing panic among residents who fled their homes. "They were keeping watch over the community when the gunmen suddenly attacked them. Sadly, the three brothers were killed on the spot. They sacrificed their lives while protecting the community," Bitrus told Vanguard.

The loss is particularly poignant for the family of Victor Danjuma, who was married with five children. His wife and children had already fled the community two weeks prior due to an attack on a neighboring village. They had planned to return home this week after a period of relative calm, but Victor was killed before the family could reunite.

The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Mr. Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack, describing the killing of the three brothers as heartbreaking. He lamented the persistent attacks in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State, despite repeated calls for improved security. Tengwong urged security agencies to intensify their protection of vulnerable communities and bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing that residents can no longer endure living under constant threat.
