Three Women Murdered in Spain in 24 Hours in Suspected Gender-Based Violence Cases

Spain is confronting a wave of violence against women, with three women murdered in the past 24 hours in incidents suspected to be gender-based crimes. Another woman died after a brutal attack in February involving flammable liquid, allegedly orchestrated by hitmen on her husband's orders. Investigations are underway, and in several cases, partners or ex-partners have been detained.

The latest victims, aged between 30 and 56, were found in Málaga, Toledo, and Alicante. The Guardia Civil is investigating these deaths as femicides. If confirmed, these cases would raise the total number of women killed in gender-based violence incidents this year to 33, and 1,373 since 2003.

Spanish government spokesperson Elma Saiz condemned the killings, stating that if they are confirmed as femicides, the country would "once again face an unbearable tragedy that strikes society." She added, "Eradicating gender-based violence is a collective responsibility, and we will not rest until we achieve it."

Details of the recent attacks paint a grim picture. In Toledo, a 48-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his partner to death in their home. In Alicante, a 61-year-old husband was detained after his 56-year-old wife was found dead in their home; he had previously been arrested in 2008 following a domestic violence complaint filed by the deceased. In Málaga, a 30-year-old woman was found stabbed to death, and her partner reportedly committed suicide by jumping from a wall after the crime. Additionally, a 30-year-old woman who was hospitalized in February with severe burns died recently; her husband is suspected of ordering the attack, which involved dousing her with flammable liquid.
