Tinubu to Announce Fresh Pay Increase for Soldiers Soon, Defence Minister Says

President Bola Tinubu is set to announce a new salary increase for Nigeria's armed forces personnel soon, according to the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd).

I want to state here that a few weeks ago, I mentioned that soldiers are now receiving ₦100,000, and I know that generated both positive and negative reactions.

General Musa disclosed this while speaking at a training and financial empowerment workshop for widows and wives of service personnel at Lungi Barracks in Abuja. He emphasized the federal government's commitment to enhancing troop welfare and ensuring adequate compensation for the sacrifices made in safeguarding the nation.

Recalling his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, Musa mentioned that soldiers' salaries were increased from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 approximately two years ago. He stated that further efforts are underway to implement another increase, expressing confidence that the President, whom he described as a "listening father," understands the troops' sacrifices and is dedicated to their fair remuneration.

We are, however, making further efforts to increase it again. We know our President is a listening father who understands the sacrifices our troops are making and is committed to ensuring they are well remunerated. So, I am confident that very soon, Mr. President will announce another salary increase for our men.

The workshop, themed "Renewed Hope for Families of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Through Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development," was organized by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). The initiative reflects the government's dedication to improving the economic well-being of military families, especially widows and spouses of non-commissioned officers serving in operational areas.

Musa acknowledged the complex security challenges faced by military personnel and the extended periods they spend away from their families. He highlighted the critical role spouses and dependents play in maintaining morale and effectiveness, stating that while the courage of service members is celebrated, the steadfast support of their families is equally vital. He particularly addressed the widows, recognizing their strength and perseverance in the face of loss as an enduring source of inspiration.
