Toluca beat Monterrey 2-0 to win the Leagues Cup

Toluca won the Leagues Cup on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Monterrey at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium. Alexis Vega and Brazilian forward Helinho scored for the champions.

Vega opened the scoring in the fourth minute after recovering a rebounded ball following a shot by Federico Viñas that struck the post. He sent the ball into the corner to give Toluca an early lead.

Monterrey created several chances, including a clear opportunity for Hugo Cuypers in the 42nd minute. The Rayados pushed forward after halftime and came close to equalizing when Cuypers headed just wide in the 59th minute.

Toluca struck again in the 70th minute while Monterrey were pressing. Helinho finished after a pass from Viñas, giving coach Antonio Mohamed’s team a decisive advantage. Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada later made another error, leaving Jorge Díaz with an open shot that hit the post.

The result confirmed Toluca as the strongest Mexican team of the past two years, according to the report. Earlier, León beat América 1-0 in the third-place match, with Colombia’s Díber Cambindo scoring from Daniel Arcila’s assist.
