Tourists' U-turn causes crash with DIAS police motorcycle on Athens-Sounio highway

Two police officers from the DIAS unit sustained injuries late Tuesday night after a rented car, carrying four tourists, attempted a U-turn on the Athens-Sounio highway. The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. as the car, traveling towards Sounio, reportedly tried to change direction just 20 to 25 meters before a curve.

The maneuver left the two officers on their motorcycle, also heading towards Sounio, with minimal time to react. The car had positioned itself across the road, leading to a severe collision. The DIAS officers were taken to the 401 General Military Hospital of Athens, where they remain hospitalized with injuries and contusions, though their lives are not in danger.

According to ERT, the location of the accident, near a small chapel, suggests it may be a recurring site for similar incidents. The road's configuration and proximity to the turn significantly reduce reaction time for drivers proceeding normally. The driver of the rental car, of German nationality, tested negative for alcohol. Authorities are investigating the exact causes and circumstances of the U-turn and the subsequent collision.
