Traffic Resumes at Isaccea Border Crossing as Ferry to Orlivka Runs Without Restrictions

The ferry crossing linking Isaccea in Romania with Orlivka in Ukraine is operating normally again, after repeated disruptions caused by drone attacks during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Romania’s Coast Guard said on Thursday that traffic had resumed gradually at the Isaccea-Orlivka border point. All categories of vehicles could cross without restrictions.

At this moment, border crossing through the Isaccea-Orlivka Border Crossing Point is taking place without traffic restrictions.

The crossing has been destroyed four times since the beginning of the invasion through the end of the first quarter of this year. It is one of the busiest transit routes between Romania and Ukraine, but queues regularly build when Ukrainian authorities temporarily suspend traffic after drone attacks.

During the night, Russia attacked the international ferry crossing at Orlivka, located on the border with Romania. The attack hit the building and grounds of the crossing, and fires broke out, which rescue teams brought under control.

Earlier this month, Russian drones struck the Orlivka ferry crossing on the Ukrainian side of the border. Ukraine’s border service said the attack hit the crossing’s building and grounds, triggering fires that rescue teams brought under control. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the border crossing with Romania had been deliberately damaged.

Romanian authorities in Tulcea County are also preparing for possible congestion as the Jewish New Year approaches and a pilgrimage is due to take place in a Ukrainian city. Ukrainian authorities said attacks on border crossings were not unprecedented, citing a Shahed drone strike on the Vinohradivka road crossing on the Moldova border during the night of Aug. 24-25.
