Trump and Zelenskyy Hold Private Meeting Amid Shifting U.S. Stance on Ukraine War

U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a private, closed-door meeting Tuesday morning before the funeral ceremony for Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. The discussions, which excluded the press, are drawing significant attention amid indications that the Trump administration may be reconsidering its position on the war in Ukraine.

According to The New York Times, the meeting was held in a small format. Unlike a tense encounter last year, when Trump publicly criticized Zelenskyy, describing him as having "no cards in hand," current interactions between the two leaders are reportedly much more cordial. This shift in tone follows a constructive meeting at the NATO summit earlier this month and a more favorable attitude toward Ukraine demonstrated in recent weeks by the Trump administration and some conservative circles close to the president.

Shortly after arriving in the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that his primary objective is to bolster "ballistic defense and strategic cooperation with America." This suggests the Ukrainian leader aims to accelerate discussions on the production and acquisition of Patriot systems, as well as advance a bilateral agreement on drone development and manufacturing. This visit is preceded by concrete steps in this direction. Recently, Washington's special envoy to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, visited Kyiv, where the foundations for a drone cooperation agreement were laid. Concurrently, a Ukrainian delegation held discussions with representatives from Raytheon, a major producer of Patriot systems.

In recent months, the Trump administration appears to have adopted its most favorable stance toward Ukraine since the Republican's return to the White House. Signals of this shift have come from both official American statements and the engagement of conservative influencers with Kyiv. Last week, conservative activist Laura Loomer, considered an ally of Donald Trump, met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy occurs on the same day the U.S. leader is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the first time since February. Relations between these two leaders have deteriorated in recent months over strategic differences regarding Iran.
