Trump dismisses NYC mayor's threat to arrest Netanyahu

U.S. President Donald Trump has firmly stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not face arrest while in the United States. Trump's declaration on social media directly addressed a potential move by New York City's new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who had indicated an investigation into ordering police to detain Netanyahu.

Mamdani admitted uncertainty about his authority to order the arrest of a foreign leader but confirmed discussions with his legal team ahead of the UN General Assembly in September. He had previously expressed his belief that Netanyahu "belongs in The Hague" and called him "a war criminal," referencing the International Criminal Court's 2024 findings.

The International Criminal Court had stated in 2024 that it possessed reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu bore responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. These allegations stem from Israel's military offensive in Gaza, which followed the October 7, 2023, cross-border attack by Hamas. Netanyahu's office has dismissed the mayor's stance and criticized the ICC as a "kangaroo court."
