Donald Trump again raised the Nobel Peace Prize while praising his diplomatic record, saying he had ended eight wars and asking why that achievement had not brought him the award. He made the remarks in the Oval Office on Friday, September 4, while discussing a new US peace initiative for the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Because I have ended eight wars. I hope you are proud of me. I ended eight wars. I did not receive an award for that. I ended eight wars. Did I get a Nobel? No,” Trump said.

He said his administration had an idea for ending the war and described Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as two excellent negotiators. “We have an idea for peace,” Trump said. “We sent them to see if something could be done. And maybe there is a fairly good chance that we will succeed.” He did not disclose the details of the proposal.

Witkoff and Kushner met Russian President Vladimir Putin for more than three hours at the Kremlin on Saturday, September 5. Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov called the talks constructive, open and useful, but no major development followed. The two negotiators then traveled to Kyiv, where they held several rounds of talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday. National security advisers from Britain, France and Germany joined the final part of the discussions.

The article says earlier US efforts to resolve the war had produced little progress and that negotiations had stalled in recent months. The meetings in Moscow and Kyiv therefore ended without the breakthrough Trump’s remarks had suggested might be possible.
