Trump imposes up to 100% tariffs on drones, parts

President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation imposing tariffs of up to 100% on imported drones and their components, signaling a move to bolster the U.S. drone industry and supply chain. The order, based on findings from a Section 232 trade investigation, is widely seen as a strategic move to counter China's significant control over the global drone market. According to the proclamation, the tariffs will vary based on the national security implications of specific drone types. Drones exceeding 25 kilograms in maximum takeoff weight, thermal imaging drones, docking stations, and certain critical components will face the highest 100% tariff. Smaller drones and other parts deemed to have less impact on national security will be subject to a 25% tariff. The tariffs are set to take effect on September 3rd for the 100% rate and 180 days later, on February 9th, 2027, for the 25% rate. The White House emphasized that drones are a critical technology for modern warfare and U.S. military operations, asserting that the new tariff program aims to protect the nation's defense industrial base and create domestic jobs. While the tariffs are primarily aimed at Chinese imports, the U.S. administration has established preferential tariff rates for key allies. Drones and components imported from South Korea, the European Union, Japan, Taiwan, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland will be subject to a 15% tariff. Products from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff. South Korea, in particular, had previously argued for enhanced cooperation with allies like itself to strengthen the UAS supply chain, citing market monopolization by a few companies in specific countries. The differentiated tariff structure is expected to provide South Korean drone manufacturers with a competitive advantage in the U.S. market compared to Chinese products.
