Trump signs executive order to secure US defence supply chains

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday aimed at bolstering America's defense supply chains, particularly for critical materials and components.

The White House released a Fact Sheet detailing the order, which directs the Department of War to initiate regulatory action for comprehensive supply chain mapping of designated critical supplies. It also urges defense contractors to identify and qualify new domestic and partner nation sources for essential minerals, materials, and components used in national security procurements, while simultaneously removing regulatory hurdles in this qualification process.

The Order limits circumstances in which the Secretary of Defence should issue waivers for critical materials from covered nations under 10 U.S.C. 4872, including, in certain cases, requiring mitigation plans to onshore supply chains.

The executive order limits the circumstances under which the Secretary of Defense can grant waivers for critical materials sourced from geopolitical adversaries. In some cases, it mandates mitigation plans to onshore supply chains. The Fact Sheet highlighted that despite existing prohibitions on using materials from adversaries, supply chain resilience and domestic production have been historically neglected.

To maintain American dominance amid renewed great power competition, the United States must safeguard its supply chains against physical, cyber, and economic subversion, the Fact Sheet stated. The administration also referenced previous executive orders from Trump, including those from February 2026 to establish the America First Arms Transfer Strategy, January 2025 to modernize defense acquisitions, March 2025 to boost American mineral production, and April 2025 to further modernize defense acquisitions and spur innovation.
