Trump Suggests Renaming New Mexico ‘New America’

Donald Trump has found another name to change. The US president suggested that New Mexico should become “New America,” an idea the state’s governor rejected immediately.

“Many people have suggested changing the name of New Mexico... to ‘NEW AMERICA,’” Trump wrote on social media. He said the new name would be “far more prestigious and beautiful” for residents of the potentially wonderful state, adding, “Wow, I love it!!!”

The White House shared an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out in the state’s name and replaced with “America.” Several US media outlets reported that the idea was nothing more than an online hoax.

It is not up for discussion. It belongs to us from the time when the United States itself did not yet exist.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham told Fox News that the state’s name “is not up for discussion” and belongs to its residents from a time before the United States itself existed. She said Trump wanted to distract Americans from issues such as rapidly rising gasoline prices.

The proposal came days after Trump signed an order renaming Lake Ontario the “American Lake” amid a trade dispute with Canada. Last week, during the conflict with Iran, he suggested calling the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” but later appeared to indicate that he would not pursue the plan. In 2025, on his first day back in the White House, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Mexico rejected that decision, and Canada also opposes changing Lake Ontario’s name.
