Tusk: Politics Cannot Be Based on Flattery or Yielding to the Whims of the Most Powerful Leaders

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a stark warning against the dangers of political subservience, particularly in the context of international alliances like NATO and the relationship between Europe and the United States. Speaking ahead of the European Political Community Summit in Armenia, Tusk articulated a clear vision for Poland's foreign policy: a commitment to a united Europe, an effective NATO, and robust solidarity, including military cooperation, with the US and Canada. He emphasized that national interests must be pursued with a firm, yet friendly, approach, devoid of 'self-deception or flattery,' even towards the most powerful global figures.

Conflicts within NATO are the last thing we need. Lately, we see NATO being challenged, questions being raised about whether we need it or not. There are attempts to break up or weaken the European Union as well.

Tusk specifically pointed to a perceived shift in the approach of some leaders, including US President Donald Trump, regarding NATO and transatlantic ties. This divergence from traditional stances, which previously guaranteed security and stability, is a cause for alarm, he stated. For Poland, and indeed for the broader European continent, the integrity of the Western community—defined by shared values rather than mere geography—is paramount and must be preserved at all costs. The Prime Minister's remarks underscore a growing concern within Central and Eastern Europe about the reliability of security guarantees and the potential fragmentation of Western unity.

For me, the Western community, I'm not talking about geography but a system of values, deserves to be maintained at all costs.
