Tusk tells Spain to 'take example from Poland' on border crisis

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on Spain to emulate Poland's stringent asylum and border control measures, asserting that such actions are crucial for the preservation of the Schengen Area. Tusk's remarks came in response to a crisis in Spain's Ceuta enclave, where thousands of migrants crossed the border from Morocco.

Authorities in Madrid reported that approximately 50,000 migrants entered Ceuta uncontrolled within a single day. While Spanish Interior Ministry data, cited by Cadena SER radio, indicated that around 37,500 had already returned to Morocco, local officials confirmed at least 43 deaths at sea. This situation has prompted Tusk to advocate for a Polish-style approach.

"Poland has tightened asylum law, border procedures, and built effective barriers on the border with Belarus, which is the eastern border of the Union," Tusk wrote on the X platform. "We have invested billions of euros and engaged thousands of soldiers, police officers, and border guards. Spain must take an example from us if Schengen is to survive."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, visiting Ceuta, described the events as a "violation of Spain's territorial integrity." The crisis has drawn international attention, with French President Emmanuel Macron recommending enhanced border controls with Spain. The Netherlands and Belgium have also urged Spain to secure the EU's external border in Ceuta.
