Two die in US from parasitic infection outbreak

Two individuals have died in the U.S. state of Michigan due to an outbreak of the parasitic infection cyclospora, health authorities in the state announced Monday, according to the Associated Press.

These are the first confirmed fatalities in the United States associated with the parasite, known for causing severe gastrointestinal problems. Nine U.S. states are currently experiencing an outbreak of the infection. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports over 18,000 confirmed or suspected cases.

Michigan health officials stated that both deceased individuals had underlying health conditions that may have been exacerbated by the parasitic infection and dehydration. The officials declined to provide further details on the deaths. Cyclospora infection typically causes diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, and fatigue. If untreated, it can lead to dehydration and serious complications requiring extensive medical care. The CDC notes that the illness is rarely fatal.

The parasite infects the intestines and spreads through feces. Previous outbreaks have been linked to produce washed with contaminated water. The current outbreak is believed to originate from lettuce produced in Mexico, which was served at Taco Bell restaurants across the nine affected states. Taco Bell has stated it no longer uses lettuce from that supplier, and producer Taylor Farms has recalled lettuce from central Mexico.
