Two Indonesian Tennis Players Reach ITF M15 Qualifying Finals in Bali

Indonesia will have two players in the qualifying finals of the ITF M15 tournament in Bali after Gunawan Trismuwantara and Ethan David Zapp won their opening matches.

Gunawan, 23, defeated Australia’s Sebastian Huggins 6-3, 6-0 in 56 minutes. He played aggressively in the second set and did not allow Huggins to win a game. “Focusing on each game was the key factor in my victory. However, this is far from enough, as the next match will be tougher,” Gunawan said in a written statement.

Gunawan will next play Japan’s Haruto Ishikawa, who beat Ashwin Ryan Sharma in a three-set match. Zapp, 17, advanced by defeating fellow Indonesian Dewana Gustaman 6-2, 6-3. He will face Japan’s fourth seed, Ren Nakamura, for a place in the main draw.

Six Indonesian players entered the qualifying round, but four were eliminated in the first round: Renaldi Aquila Salim, M. Ragil Putra, Kareem Abdul Hakim and Raphael Rio Suryana. The tournament’s fourth leg runs from August 31 to September 6 at the Bali Beach Country Club in Nusa Dua. The series has returned to ITF M15 status after previously using the Universal Tennis Rating Pro Tennis Tour format.
