Two Offshore Earthquakes Shook West Java Over the Weekend

West Java experienced offshore tremors over the weekend, with the latest earthquake registering a magnitude of 4.8. The Indonesian Ocean, south of West Java, was the origin of the quake on Sunday, July 20, 2026, at 15:11 Western Indonesian Time. The vibrations were felt across various areas, reaching as far as the Bogor region.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was situated 79 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi Regency. The shaking intensity was measured at scale III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) in several locations, including Cikotok, Kalapanunggal, and Sukabumi City, where the vibrations felt like a truck passing by. In areas like Soreang and Bogor, the intensity was scale II MMI, causing only slight swaying of hanging objects.

BMKG analysis indicated that the earthquake was shallow, caused by rock deformation activity at the seabed. Importantly, the agency confirmed that the earthquake posed no tsunami risk. This type of seismic activity is not uncommon in the region, which is prone to tectonic movements.

BMKG attributed this earlier tremor to the activity of underwater active faults.

Both earthquakes highlight the seismic vulnerability of the West Java region. While these recent tremors were relatively minor and did not cause significant damage or tsunamis, they serve as a reminder of the geological forces at play beneath the ocean floor.
