Two shot in separate incidents in Dhaka

A trader and a housewife were shot in separate incidents in Dhaka's Shanir Akhra and Darus Salam areas last night.

In Shanir Akhra, businessman Aslam Khan, 38, was shot inside his crockery shop on Zia Smarani Road at about 8 p.m., said Sajib Kumar Baroi, an investigation officer at Kadamtali Police Station. Police arrested a man with a firearm and ammunition in connection with the shooting, he said.

Aslam was speaking with a customer when a man entered the shop and opened fire, according to Aslam's cousin, Miraj Khan. Aslam suffered bullet wounds to his left hand and right cheek. He was taken first to a local hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The motive was not immediately known. Miraj said local residents caught the alleged shooter as he fled.

About half an hour later, Jesmin Akter, 38, was shot inside her home in the Madbar Bari area of Darus Salam. Her son, Md Majidul Islam Yasin, said she was watching television beside a window in their tin-shed house when someone fired from outside. Jesmin was taken first to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Md Habibur Rahman, an inspector in charge of the hospital's police outpost, said she was receiving emergency treatment for a bullet wound to her right upper arm. Darus Salam police are investigating.
