Typhoon Saudel Approaches Taiwan; Peak Impact Expected Tonight

Typhoon Saudel is nearing Taiwan, with its center expected to make its closest approach on the evening of October 27th and throughout the 28th. Lin De-en, a doctor of atmospheric science at National Taiwan University, warned of localized thunderstorms across the island on the 27th, followed by a risk of heavy rainfall in the central and southern regions on the 28th.

From the evening of the 27th to the 28th, the center of Typhoon Saudel will be closest to Taiwan.

Lin, who also maintains the Facebook page "Teacher Lin's Weather Station," noted that Taiwan will experience a dual impact over the next two days. This will be from Saudel's outer cloud bands and the typhoon-induced southwesterly winds. Consequently, rainfall is predicted to be more significant in the central and southern parts of the island compared to the north. He specifically cautioned that the areas south of Chiayi and the central mountainous regions should brace for intense torrential downpours.

Lin highlighted that the period from the evening of the 27th to the 28th will be when Saudel's center is nearest to Taiwan, resulting in the most pronounced effects from wind, rain, and waves. Earlier on the 27th, southern Taiwan could expect scattered short-term showers or thunderstorms, while other areas would remain mostly cloudy to clear. In the afternoon, localized thunderstorms were possible in areas north of Miaoli and the eastern mountainous regions. By evening, the central region was also forecast to see scattered short-term showers.

Looking ahead to the 28th, Lin advised that central and southern Taiwan should prepare for heavy rainfall, while northern Taiwan and Taitung should be wary of strong gusts. Localized heavy showers are possible in areas south of Chiayi and in the central mountains, with a particular risk of short-duration torrential downpours. Scattered showers are also anticipated in northern, northeastern, and eastern mountainous regions.
