U.S. and Iran escalate as attacks spread across several countries

The latest U.S.-Iran exchange has spread across the region, with American strikes on Iranian military sites followed by Iranian missile and drone attacks against U.S. targets in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq. President Donald Trump warned that further retaliation could bring a much heavier U.S. assault.

U.S. Central Command said American forces targeted facilities belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. The sites included air-defense positions, radar systems, maritime targets, mine-laying facilities and communications installations. Trump later told Fox News that U.S. forces had also struck radar systems Iran was rebuilding.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed it attacked an American base and killed a large number of U.S. troops. Two U.S. officials told Reuters that no American deaths or injuries had been reported so far. Jordan’s military said it intercepted 10 of 13 ballistic missiles, with three landing in uninhabited areas. Kuwait and Bahrain also said they intercepted Iranian drones.

Iranian forces further claimed to have attacked U.S. bases in Erbil, northern Iraq, with missiles and drones. The Revolutionary Guard said a repair facility and warehouses were destroyed and that several American soldiers were killed. The claims had not been confirmed by the United States or Iraq.

Iranian authorities said U.S. strikes also hit civilian sites. The Iranian Red Crescent reported that five people died and at least 50 were injured when a wedding near Sirik, close to the Strait of Hormuz, was hit. A four-year-old child was reportedly among the dead, while a local official put the number injured at 68. U.S. Central Command said it was aware of the reports but rejected the idea that American forces target civilians.

Iranian media also reported strikes near Ahvaz and Jiroft’s civilian airport, as well as explosions in Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, Asaluyeh and Qeshm. The Revolutionary Guard threatened “crushing and devastating blows” against the United States. Trump said Iran would be hit “at a much harder and higher level” if it continued its retaliatory attacks, and said there would be “very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran” after an even larger strike. He also dismissed the value of a new ceasefire agreement, saying the United States had given Iran many chances.
