UEFA considers ending FIFA boycott threat but maintains pressure on Infantino

UEFA is reportedly contemplating withdrawing its threat to boycott FIFA competitions, a move that could signal a de-escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two governing bodies. However, despite this potential shift, the European football confederation intends to maintain its pressure on FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Sources indicate that UEFA and its 55 member federations will use a meeting in Monaco, coinciding with the Champions League draw, to address the dispute.

The initial threat of a boycott, issued on July 30, was a strong reaction to Infantino's proposal for a commercial venture involving private investors in FIFA tournaments. Although Infantino abandoned the idea due to widespread opposition, European football leaders maintained their threat, demanding assurances that such attempts to "disfigure football" would not recur.

This potential softening of UEFA's stance is reportedly linked to the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, scheduled to take place in Poland from September 5 to 27. Poland, as the host nation, and several qualified European teams could face delicate situations if a boycott were implemented.

UEFA, in collaboration with CONCACAF (North, Central American and Caribbean Football Confederation) and AFC (Asian Football Confederation), appears determined to challenge Infantino's leadership. Infantino is currently the sole declared candidate for the FIFA presidential elections scheduled for March 18, 2027. While confederations do not directly influence the election, the 211 member federations hold the voting power under the "one country, one vote" principle. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has confirmed he will not run for FIFA president but has expressed willingness to support a candidate capable of opposing Infantino.
