Ukraine: Zelenskyy replaces army chief amid protests

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday the removal of Oleksandr Syrskyi as the army's commander-in-chief, appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi to the position. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Syrskyi and the soldiers for their efforts in defending Ukraine, stating a shared goal of victory and peace negotiations.

I have decided that the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be Mykhailo Drapatyi... I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrskyi and to each of our warriors for Ukraine's strong front-line positions.

This decision comes after mounting criticism and nationwide protests, which saw thousands demonstrate in Kyiv and other cities. The protests were largely triggered by the recent dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and his subsequent public conflict with Syrskyi. Fedorov accused Syrskyi of obstructing reforms and army modernization efforts.

Syrskyi, who was born in Russia and trained during the Soviet era, had previously led significant Ukrainian campaigns, including the defense of Kyiv in 2022 and operations in Kharkiv and Kursk. Zelenskyy acknowledged Syrskyi's role in these successes. However, the military veteran had also faced disagreements with reformers regarding the use of drones and new technologies.

The leadership change marks a dramatic week for Ukraine, following a series of political shifts that have led to some of the largest protests since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. Former Defense Minister Fedorov, a proponent of drone warfare, welcomed Syrskyi's replacement, calling it a "breath of fresh air and a new hope."
