UMNO Perlis to Go Solo in Upcoming General Election

UMNO Perlis has declared its intention to contest the upcoming 16th General Election (PRU16) in the state as a standalone party. The state chapter will not engage in any cooperation or discussions regarding alliances with other political parties, including Perikatan Nasional (PN).

There were parties that contacted me wanting to meet (for cooperation) but it is still too early and UMNO Perlis's stance at this time is to go it alone in PRU16, that is the will of the party members.

Datuk Rozabil Abd. Rahman, Chairman of the UMNO Perlis State Liaison Body, stated that this decision reflects the wishes of the majority of party members and grassroots supporters. UMNO Perlis plans to focus its efforts across all 15 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats and three parliamentary constituencies within the state.

Rozabil acknowledged that some parties have approached UMNO Perlis for potential collaboration, but emphasized that it is too early to consider such arrangements. He noted that UMNO Perlis did not secure any seats in the previous election, making it imperative for them to work diligently in all constituencies this time. Reflecting on past electoral strategies, Rozabil recalled UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) contesting solo in the Johor state election while forming a coalition with PN in Negeri Sembilan. He clarified that UMNO has not made any official pacts, only engaging in suitable partnerships for specific elections. Based on the momentum observed in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, Rozabil expressed hope that the people of Perlis will welcome BN back to govern the state, asserting that the current PN administration differs significantly from the former BN government. He added, "We are not perfect and have weaknesses, but if you compare the current PN government, it is far different from the previous BN government. We hope the people can accept UMNO."
