UN chief condemns Russian and Ukrainian attacks causing civilian deaths

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned both Russian and Ukrainian attacks that have resulted in civilian deaths and damage to infrastructure on both sides of the border. In a press release, Guterres stated he "condemns in the strongest terms" recent Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, which killed and injured dozens of civilians and caused extensive damage. He also condemned recent Ukrainian drone attacks on several Russian regions, which also led to civilian casualties and damaged infrastructure. Guterres voiced deep concern over the escalating conflict between the two nations, emphasizing that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are a clear violation of international humanitarian law and must cease immediately. The Secretary-General also highlighted his worry regarding the increasing risks to shipping in the Black and Azov Seas and the potential consequences for global food security. Both Russia and Ukraine are significant grain exporters via the Black Sea. Guterres urged the parties to de-escalate quickly, leading to a "complete, immediate and unconditional ceasefire," and a comprehensive peace in line with international law, including the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.
