Understanding Prophet Muhammad's Character as a Reflection of the Quran

The character and conduct of Prophet Muhammad are widely regarded as a living embodiment of the teachings found in the Quran. Islamic scholars have long emphasized this connection, with figures like Imam Al-Ghazali explaining in his renowned work, Ihya Ulumuddin, that the Prophet's demeanor, ethics, and interactions with the world were a direct manifestation of Quranic values.

According to scholars such as Zainuddin al-Thusi, Allah SWT revealed the Quran to Prophet Muhammad, providing him with the finest examples of character, conduct, and etiquette for navigating life. This divine guidance led to the understanding that the Prophet's akhlaq (character) was, in essence, the Quran itself. The companion Sa'ad bin Hisyam recounted asking Aisyah Radhiyallahu anha and Abu Bakar about the Prophet's character. Aisyah's response, "Have you not read the Quran? Indeed, the character of the Messenger of Allah was the Quran," highlights this profound integration.

Imam Al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulumuddin further elaborates on how the Quran guided the Prophet towards excellent moral conduct. Several verses from the Quran are cited to illustrate these principles. For instance, Surah Al-A'raf, verse 199, advises: "Take to forgiveness; command the good, and turn away from the ignorant." This verse exemplifies the Prophet's approach of patience and understanding in dealing with others.

Similarly, Surah An-Nahl, verse 90, commands: "Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives. And He forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will remember." This verse underscores the comprehensive nature of the divine commands that shaped the Prophet's ethical framework, encompassing justice, kindness, and the avoidance of wrongdoing. Other verses from Surah Luqman and Surah Asy-Syura further reinforce themes of establishing prayer, enjoining good, forbidding evil, patience in adversity, and forgiveness, all of which are seen as integral components of the Prophet Muhammad's exemplary character.
