União Brasil Abandons PL Coalition in Rio, Complicating Flávio Bolsonaro's Southeast Campaign

The União Brasil party has announced it will abandon its coalition with the PL in Rio de Janeiro, choosing to remain neutral in the state's gubernatorial election. This strategic shift significantly complicates the political outlook for Flávio Bolsonaro, the presidential candidate for the PL, within the crucial Southeast region of Brazil.

The decision was solidified after Márcio Canella, a former mayor of Belford Roxo and a candidate for the Senate under the União Brasil banner, withdrew his candidacy. Canella is currently facing legal scrutiny related to an operation targeting money laundering at gas stations, and was arrested after a rifle was found in his car. He will now focus on re-election to the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj).

Consequently, the União Progressista federation, formed by União Brasil and the PP party, will no longer support Douglas Ruas, the state deputy running for governor of Rio de Janeiro under the PL. Ruas, who was polling in a tie for second place in a recent survey, is now expected to face greater challenges in reaching the second round of the election without a broader coalition. This scenario is viewed negatively for Flávio Bolsonaro, as Rio de Janeiro represents the third-largest electoral college in Brazil.

This development is part of a broader trend of dissatisfaction within the "centrão" (center) political bloc regarding Flávio Bolsonaro's conduct. Several parties, including União Brasil and PP, have reportedly distanced themselves due to his perceived failure to support allies during difficult times. This includes instances where Flávio Bolsonaro allegedly did not defend Senator Ciro Nogueira of the PP or initially distanced himself from Canella after his arrest, despite earlier public support.

This marks the second significant setback for the PL's campaign in Rio de Janeiro. Earlier, former Governor Claudio Castro withdrew his Senate candidacy. The loss of União Brasil's support is particularly impactful in the Baixada Fluminense region, where the party holds considerable influence. In addition to the Rio setback, Flávio Bolsonaro also lost a key ally in Minas Gerais, as Senator Cleitinho, a frontrunner for governor, announced he would not run, withdrawing his support for the PL candidate.
