Augusto Cury proposes semi-presidentialism, says he would tap Tarcísio for prime minister

Presidential candidate Augusto Cury has proposed a significant shift in Brazil's political structure, advocating for a semi-presidential system if elected.

Under Cury's proposal, the president would focus on state affairs, while a prime minister, whom Cury suggested would be current São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, would manage the country's governance. Cury expressed admiration for Freitas, stating he would "call" him for the role if he had the "privilege of sitting in the presidential chair."

Freitas, who was present at Cury's party convention and is seeking re-election in São Paulo with the Avante party's support, did not visibly react to Cury's suggestion during the speech. Earlier, Freitas had wished the writer "good luck" on his presidential bid.

The proposed semi-presidential model, similar to ideas previously introduced in the Chamber of Deputies, involves a division of powers. The prime minister would be chosen by Congress and would be responsible for formulating government plans and directing federal administration, including managing the budget and appointing ministers. The president would retain powers such as dissolving the Chamber of Deputies during crises, appointing high court justices, diplomats, and the attorney general, and handling matters of war and peace.
