UnitedHealth, victim's family value guilty plea in executive's murder

Luigi Mangione has formally admitted his guilt in the murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson, a development welcomed by both the insurance company and the victim's family. Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death during a hearing before federal judge Margaret Garnett.

The 28-year-old defendant confessed his actions during the attack outside a Manhattan hotel where a corporate conference was taking place in December 2024. "I shot Mr. Thompson and he died. I knew what I was doing was illegal," Mangione stated in federal court.

UnitedHealth Group issued a statement mourning the loss of Thompson, who was the CEO of its UnitedHealthcare subsidiary. The company expressed gratitude to law enforcement for bringing the perpetrator to justice and extended condolences to Thompson's family and loved ones.

Thompson's family, in a press release, deemed the guilty plea a significant step forward. "While nothing will alleviate the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable. We now hope the court ensures the sentence reflects the gravity of this crime," the family stated.

Mangione's sentencing is set for December 18. In parallel, his defense team filed a motion Friday to dismiss the state murder trial, arguing that proceeding would violate double jeopardy protections.
