UNN to demolish shanties, illegal structures to restore master plan

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is embarking on a significant initiative to reclaim its campus's original architectural vision by demolishing illegal structures and informal settlements. This move is aimed at restoring the university's master plan and fostering an environment of environmental sanity, aligning with global standards for academic institutions. The university administration, under Vice-Chancellor Simon Ortuanya, is committed to returning UNN to its former glory as a leading academic center.

Owners of shops attached to university fences, along with those occupying illegal structures and shanties within the campus, have been issued a final notice. They are required to vacate and remove their properties by May 2, 2026. Following this deadline, the university's Directorate of Physical Planning, led by Okey Ekwelem, will commence demolition activities on May 6. This action follows earlier notices and engagement with affected occupants, indicating a thorough process to ensure compliance.

We have informed them that in an effort to restore UNN Master Plan and green areas, that demolition of all illegal structures situated inside and around the university fences will commence from 6 May.

The university management is appealing for full cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the success of this exercise, which is deemed crucial for safety, order, and sustainable campus development. To mitigate the impact on legitimate businesses, UNN has identified and mapped out designated spaces within its premises to accommodate retail activities, urging affected individuals to utilize these approved areas.
