Uruguay begins construction on major Route 5 and Route 102 interchange

Construction has commenced on a significant infrastructure project in Montevideo, Uruguay, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. The Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) announced the start of work on a new grade-separated interchange connecting Route 5 and Route 102, also known as the Wilson Ferreira Aldunate Beltway. This ambitious project represents an investment exceeding 1.158 billion Uruguayan pesos and is being executed by the company Hernández y González.

The new interchange will feature an overpass for Route 5 above Route 102, along with new access ramps designed to create a more orderly traffic flow in one of Montevideo's busiest areas. A roundabout will also be constructed to optimize vehicle entry and exit from the beltway. Enhancements to local lighting and signage are included in the plan. The current traffic light system at this intersection will be eliminated, a change intended to expedite travel times and enhance safety.

According to the MTOP, the intersection of Route 5 and the Beltway is one of the most congested in the department and the nation. It currently experiences constant traffic from private vehicles, suburban buses, and heavy cargo trucks, serving areas like Melilla, Lezica, and La Paz. This modernization effort is part of a broader strategy to upgrade Uruguay's road infrastructure, improve safety conditions, and optimize connectivity, particularly for a key access point to the metropolitan area.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and adhere to construction signage while the work is underway, as temporary delays are anticipated in the vicinity.
