Uruguay issues special alert for strong, severe thunderstorms

The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) has issued a special alert to the public, forecasting strong and potentially severe thunderstorms. These weather events are expected to begin Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday night, affecting the entire nation.

The storms will initially impact the western coast before gradually moving eastward. Inumet anticipates rainfall accumulation between 40 and 60 mm, with potential for higher localized amounts. Residents in affected areas should also prepare for very strong wind gusts, hail, intense lightning, and heavy downpours over short periods.

For the capital, Montevideo, the forecast indicates a gradual increase in temperature towards the weekend. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to have minimal rain, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 16°C. However, Friday may see isolated showers and thunderstorms. Saturday is predicted to have a high probability of rain and storms, with temperatures between 12°C and 17°C.

Meteorologist Mario Bidegain shared a more detailed forecast for Montevideo, suggesting temperatures could reach 20°C on Friday with over 20 mm of rain. While Saturday's rainfall might be less intense, it will persist, with temperatures between 12°C and 18°C. Sunday is expected to be dry but cloudy, with temperatures from 9°C to 15°C.
