US envoy, Nigeria's Foreign Minister discuss bilateral ties, security cooperation

The United States Mission in Nigeria has highlighted a crucial meeting between Chargé d’Affaires Keith Heffern and Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, underscoring the robust partnership between our nations. However, a concerning development from the US Congress casts a shadow over these cooperative efforts. Provisions in the proposed 2027 appropriations bill suggest a potential tightening of aid conditions, with up to half of US assistance to Nigeria being contingent on demonstrable progress in tackling insecurity, protecting vulnerable groups, and ensuring accountability. This reflects a growing unease among some US lawmakers regarding the persistent violence within Nigeria, particularly affecting Christian communities.

While we acknowledge these concerns, the Nigerian government has consistently rejected claims of religious persecution. It is imperative that our partners understand the multifaceted nature of the security challenges we face and support our efforts rather than imposing punitive measures.
