US launches third round of strikes on Iran after alleged cargo ship attack

The United States launched a third series of military strikes against Iranian targets this week, escalating tensions after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly attacked a commercial cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident left the Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy with significant damage and one civilian crew member missing.

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the vessel suffered extensive engine-room damage and caught fire, rendering it incapable of continuing its journey. CENTCOM announced on X that the latest strikes were ordered by the U.S. Commander in Chief in direct response to Iran's actions against civilian shipping.

"In response, the United States is imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait," CENTCOM stated. The strikes underscore the continuing escalation of tensions in and around the critical waterway.

The military actions highlight the ongoing confrontation between the U.S. and Iran in the region, particularly concerning freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
