US states declare August 15 'India Day' as global Indian missions gear up for 80th independence day

As India marks its 80th Independence Day, its diplomatic missions globally are orchestrating a series of events to commemorate the milestone. These celebrations extend beyond traditional ceremonies, encompassing official state proclamations, civic receptions, and vibrant cultural performances.

The proclamation recognises the vibrant and growing Indian-American community in Seattle and its significant contributions to the city's cultural fabric, economic vitality and civic life. It highlights the shared values of democracy, diversity and mutual respect that unite India and the United States, while recognising the Consulate's role in fostering meaningful people-to-people ties between India and the City.

In the United States, a notable initiative involves multiple states and cities designating August 15 as 'India Day.' Washington State and Nebraska have issued executive declarations recognizing the day. The Consulate General of India in Seattle highlighted that these proclamations acknowledge the significant contributions of the Indian-American community to the city's cultural and economic life, underscoring shared democratic values.

Mayors in Washington State, including Seattle, Bellevue, and Kent, issued official proclamations. Governor Jim Pillen of Nebraska also declared August 15 as India Day, citing India's advancements in education, science, healthcare, and economic growth. These recognitions aim to foster stronger people-to-people ties between India and the U.S.

The celebration came alive with a Bharatanatyam performance to India's timeless national song, 'Vande Mataram,' beautifully capturing the nation's enduring spirit of unity, pride, heritage, and patriotism.

Across other cities, Indian consulates hosted large-scale Independence Day receptions. In Chicago, over 300 guests attended a celebration featuring a Bharatanatyam performance. The Consulate General of India in New York partnered with local leadership in Bergen County for a community event that included youth artistic performances, celebrating India's independence and bringing together the diverse Indian diaspora.
