US Stocks Fall as Chip Sector Weakness and Iran Talks Uncertainty Weigh on Market

Wall Street experienced a downturn on Thursday, with major indices closing in negative territory, primarily dragged down by a weak performance in the semiconductor sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 313.62 points, marking a 0.63% decrease, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also saw losses of 0.38% and 0.13%, respectively. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was particularly hard-hit, plummeting 2.72%.

Several prominent chip manufacturers faced significant sell-offs. Intel and AMD experienced declines of approximately 3% each, following a broader market concern over softening demand for smartphones, which impacted Arm's stock despite strong profit forecasts. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) American Depositary Receipts (ADR) also followed suit, closing down 1.28% at $414.15.

Adding to the market's pressure was the lingering uncertainty surrounding potential peace talks between the United States and Iran. Reports indicated that both nations were moving towards a temporary agreement to cease hostilities, with Tehran reviewing a proposal. This geopolitical backdrop contributed to a cautious sentiment among investors, even as oil prices saw a slight dip, trading around $100 per barrel.

Despite the overall market weakness, some heavyweight artificial intelligence (AI) companies demonstrated resilience. Nvidia and Microsoft both posted gains of over 1.5%, underscoring continued investor confidence in the long-term prospects of major AI players amidst sector-specific headwinds.
