Uzbekistan reaffirms commitment to finalize WTO accession in 2026

Uzbekistan is pushing to complete its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2026, signaling a strong commitment to integrating into the global trade system. Azizbek Urunov, the chief negotiator and presidential special representative on WTO affairs, confirmed the goal following a working party meeting in late July.

Since March, Uzbekistan has made significant strides, aligning 190 legal and regulatory acts with WTO standards. Reforms have focused on crucial areas such as sanitary and phytosanitary measures, food safety, and anti-dumping regulations. The establishment of a unified Food Safety Committee further demonstrates the country's dedication to modernizing its trade practices.

While WTO members acknowledged Uzbekistan's progress, they also encouraged accelerated reforms, particularly concerning state-owned enterprises and agricultural support policies. The Working Party Chair noted that market access negotiations are nearing completion, with 31 out of 34 bilateral agreements submitted. Uzbekistan's delegation, comprising senior officials from economy, finance, agriculture, and justice ministries, emphasized their "full commitment to working intensively and constructively" with WTO members.

The WTO deputy director-general highlighted that accession can bolster economic resilience and strengthen the organization by updating its rules. Uzbekistan's proactive approach, evidenced by the short interval between recent working party meetings, underscores its determination to meet the 2026 target.
